Been wondering what to do with all those tiny scraps of wood youve been saving? Heres a project you can make in no time flat. Gather up a mixed bag of cut-offs or pallet wood, glue them to a board and cut out the shape of your home state, province or country.

Make your own and post a video!
Shoot a short video of what you made and post it as a video response to my video on YouTube*. I think it will be fun to see all the places people are woodworking.

Find a map that you want by doing a quick Google Images search, print it out, paste it on your boards and cut it out with a jig saw, scroll saw, or band saw.

I made my home state out of various scraps of pallet wood. The interesting thing about pallets is that the wood all ages differently, giving you different hues and colors.

For my second cut-out, I used a map of Brazil. I wanted to give a shout-out to my Portuguese-speaking friends in South America. Over the years of doing Woodworking for Mere Mortals, I have made friends with quite a few Brazilian woodworkers who I have found to be among the most creative people I know. Jetsons wall clock!

Jane, stop this crazy thing!

While decorating my retro living room we decided a new wall clock would be nice. I searched around and found several oh-so-funky examples that led me to this design.

There was a certain optimistic vision of the future portrayed in the Jetsons and in the shows design style. The jumble of odd shapes and angles paired with pastel colors evoked a sense of dazzle for the future, while keeping us grounded in the present. (50s and 60s present, that is.)

I decided to build this project using only my hand-held power tools to remind us that:

1. Woodworking can be accomplished with very little investment in tools. A jig saw doesnt cost much but is incredibly versatile. There are very few cuts it cant handle. 
2. You dont need a lot of space to do some woodworking and make some cool stuff for your house. This project and the tools I used can easily be stored in an apartment closet.

I hope you can pick up some ideas from this project and make something of your own. Ive packed the video with a plethora of tips to get you thinking differently about woodworking and realize that its something anyone can tackle. All you need is a little imagination. Kind of like the Jetsons universe.

Capping a half wall

Ive been working on a house for the past few weeks doing all of the doors, cabinets, case, base, and other trim work.  There is a small double stairway partitioned by a half wall.  Im giving it a cap, and some under cap trim to finish it off.  The cap is a simple 1x8 prestained poplar, and the under trim is colonial stop, also stained.  Here is the progression of pictures...

Starting at the top, this first corner is not a 45, but close (the rough framers were not totally square with their work - whats new right?).  But my job is to make it work.  Ive biscuit jointed the miter.
